  Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America explores "low wage America" first hand - the author moves to a new area, tries to rent the cheapest, safe accomodation available and make ends meet while working a low wage job - is it possible to make ends meet? It is very similar, in many ways, to Fast Food Nation. It is quite an entertaining read while still being scarily informative. I wonder what the situation in Australia is like in comparison.
