We love reading books to our kids and our kids love to look at books.

Here are our top five authors for preschoolers.

Mem Fox
Our kids just adore Mem Fox. We have about ten of her books as well as her CD "Mem Fox Magic" where she reads ten of her books. Our favourite for a three year old would be "Where is the Green Sheep?". Older kids will love "Wilfrid Gordon Mcdonald Partridge" and "Possum Magic". I also love Time for Bed and Boo to a Goose. Mem Fox has such a way with rhythm and rhyme which little kids love! I also love her book "Reading Magic" about teaching your kids to love reading. I've bought it for friends and the child care centre I worked in, I love it that much.

Lynley Dodd
Lynley Dodd is the author of the famous Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy. There are now heaps of books in that series. We haven't read any of her other books, other than the Hairy Maclary ones, but they are big favourites around here. Our two kids can quote all of Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy.

Eric Carle
No childhood is complete without reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar at least once. We've also enjoyed the tactile nature of The Very Busy Spider. The Bad-tempered Ladybird and The Very Quiet Cricket are also highly recommended.

Giles Andreae
Giles Andreae has written such a diverse range of books, there is sure to be at least one that every child will enjoy. Rumble in the Jungle, There's a House Inside My Mummy, and The Magic Donkey Ride are in our personal collection with Love is a Handful of Honey just added and Commotion in the Ocean about to be added. Most of Andreae's books are written in rhyme and make for a great read. Just not for before bedtime ;)

Dr Seuss
Green Eggs and Ham is a classic of childhood and the more we read of his books, the more we enjoy them! The Cat in the Hat is probably the most well known one of his books but there are dozens to discover. Many of them have been re illustrated such as My Many Coloured Days but I prefer the ones with the original illustrations. Any Dr Seuss book is a great read aloud book!
